Last Updated 2/25/06

We are in desperate need of foster homes if anyone can help. Kim's Ark will provide you with proper caging for these animals as well as food for them (We know how much babies can eat!).
If you can help us out, please send an email to adopt@kimsarkrescue.org and we can get you either an adoption application or a foster application. Thanks!

URGENT - OPERATION DESPERATION - Over 100 NY Rescued Rats!

The Ark was recently contacted by a woman in New York state who desperately needs help. Basically, due to a cage breaking, she went from 13 rats to 116 rats in 5 months and more coming. This also was due to missexing and improper caging. We had a volunteer check out the home. She reported to us that there is no running water in the house, no heat in the house (it's a cold time of the year up here), no bedding in the cages. These cages haven't been washed in months, neither have the rats. If you would like to read more about this rescue, please click here!

3 PEW Females looking for foster/forever homes!
These girls were taken in by a vet tech student in Vermont after they were no longer needed in an animal husbandry class he was taking. These girls were born last July, and are all in good general health. Let us know if you can help!
Update 1/06 - Three of these girls have been adopted by their foster mom but 5 of these girls are still looking for forever homes! Three girls are in Boxboro, MA. and two girls are in Manchester, VT.
UPDATE 2/06 - The original rescuer is going to keep two girls (one has passed away due to mammary tumors), which leaves only three girls in need of a forever home!
Word from one of our foster homes is that these girls are incredibly sweet and just want to explore everything! Fluffernutter, Nougat and Schmell are the three remaining girls - they are quickly becoming sweethearts who accept people as bringers of Good Things (food!), and are learning to explore the house!
They are still a tad shy, but warming up very quickly. If you happen to adopt these girls, they will come with care baskets that include food, yogies, chew toys, and a hammock!

Rats in Maine Shelter - Young Boys, High Whites! (1/06)

The Ark has received a plea of help from a shelter in ME. A lady found out she had cancer and needed to surrender all her rats, and was saying that she would give the male rats away as snake food. The shelter decided to take in ALL 36 boys to prevent this from happening. Then they found out another 8 need to be taken in before they end up as food - as you can imagine, this shelter was quickly overrun! We're trying to help the shelter place them into permanent or temporary foster homes. The rats were split into 2 groups and taken home with the shelter workers. We are still waiting on more information, but these boys need your help! They are mostly high whites, some are dumbos, and one is a hairless. If you can open your heart or homes to these rats either permanently or even as a foster home, we are sure the rats would appreciate it! !

4 Boucy Berks Available in East Providence, RI (8/9)

2 agouti berks and 2 black berk girls have traveled from the MSPCA in Boston to their foster home in East Providence, RI. The black girls are a bit shyer, and definitely hammock hogs. As you can see, the agouti girls are little hams when theres a camera around! ALL the girls love their wheel! These girls are settling nicely into their foster home, who reports that they are hyper, nosey little gymnists. They are very sweet, but can also get a little nippy at times, mostly around food or if their foster mom smells like -ew!- boyrats! They are getting used to baths and in general just love to be around people. How can you pass up faces like these? Please give these cuties a forever home today!

Update 1/06 These girls are still looking for an understanding home that will love them!

2 Neutered boys in ME
Originally from the shelter in Bedford, NH. Two remained, brothers. Vincent is the more outgoing of the two, while Monet still isn't quite sure if people are all good or not. (He's a crybaby, which is actually quite endearing!) They are both himis and recently neutered.

2 Girls in Maine - 2 males, 2 females (1/06)
The girls:

New names: Agouti hooded "Knick Knack" (Nicky) and Black Hooded "Paddy Whack" (Paddy)

The girls started out real shy, especially Paddy Whack, and would hide whenever I approached. They have since started to trust me and now great me at their door. Paddy still freezes when I try to pick her up but now she doesn't run off the side of the bed in fear during playtime Smiley Paddy is a very athletic girl who loves having lots of things to climb on and dig through. She has a sleek athletic build, opposite of her squishable chubby sister. Knick Knack is a hamm and loves having all the attention, she is brave, very flirtatious (sp?) and loves her sister. Both girls are a year old and play well with other respectful rats. The girls have also become litter box trained since switching their bedding to fabric!

20+ Rats Dropped Off at the Humane Society of Chittenden County in South Burlington, Vermont
(2/25)
More than twenty rats were found abandoned on the steps of a retail store. The owner of the store was kind enough to bring them to the local humane society, where the workers found they had quite a job on their hands! The rats were of mixed sexes and ages ranging an estimated two years, to two days as of Feb 24th. All of the adult rats appear to be well socialized and healthy, and have since been separated, with the females on pregnancy watch. If you are willing and able to find room in your homes for these sweeties, please contact the shelter directly at (802) 862-0135

Lone boy in Northhampton, MA
Wiseguy is a sweet neutered boy who was rescued from a petstore when it was closing and the remaining rats were go go to a local raptor group. His current owner can not keep him due to moving back home to a house where 2 of the other inhabitants are allergic. Wiseguy does NOT get along with other rats, and so would be a great companion for someone looking for a single rat. If you think Wiseguy is the guy for you, please contact the ark.

While most of these rats are located in MA or NJ, transport can be arranged throughout the New England (MA, NH, ME, RI...) and Mid-Atlantic (NJ, NY, CT, MD...) areas. Many other rats available in PA/OH/GA/FL and other parts of the country, particularly MD, Wash DC, VA and OH, ID, IL.
