Available Rats and Mice for Adoption Click here for a list of other rat rescues in the New England/Mid-Atlantic area.
Wilbur and Wilma in NJ (9/25/08) Two pet rats were lucky to be found after being abandoned property of a plant nursery in NJ. One is male, the other is female, both are brown and white. They are unafraid of people, can be handled, and do not bite. Cages purchased for them since they were found can accompany them to new homes, transportation is readily available within 30 miles of Kingston, NJ. Four Males in Red Hill, PA (9/15/08) Four rats are in need of a new home as their owner's living situation has changed and she can no longer keep them. All are males around one year old. Their cage and supplies can accompany them to a new home, and transportation is available within 45 minutes of Red Hill, PA. It is preferred that all four find a new home together. Here is a description of each: Babies in PA (8/7/08) Four dumbo rats adopted from a pet store surprised their owners with 29 babies in late July. As the parents were cinnamon dumbo hooded and rex, we expect the babies are at least in part rex and/or dumbos. Several have been adopted, but more are waiting for homes. Transportation is readily available within a reasonable distance of their foster home in Scranton, PA. Rat Abandoned on West Hartford Ball Field (8/7/08) An Animal Control Officer in West Hartford CT found a white rat a few weeks ago on a ball field. The little rat narrowly escaped becoming dinner to a predator that evening. He is now safe and sound in the AC office, and is in need of a foster or adoptive home. Obviously, we have little information about his age, personality, etc. as his origin is unknown. Cagney, Patches, and Lacey in NJ (6/29/08) These three rats cannot accompany their owner as he goes off to college, so they are in need of a new home. All are healthy at about 18 months old. Two are white and one is hooded, all are very friendly. Transportation is readily available within about 60 miles of Hoptacong, NJ. Lab Rats in NYC Area (6/28/08) A group of lab rats have "graduated" from a vet tech program and are in need of homes (foster or adoptive). Male and female PEWs are available, and the Ark is making efforts to have them spayed/neutered. All are healthy and are under one year old. Transportation may be possible to upstate NY, MA, and is readily available within about 1-2 hours drive of Queens County, NY. Six Boys in PA/NJ (6/28/08) A group of six rats have had little luck finding homes while at a shelter in Allentown, PA. All appear to be PEWs or himis, their exact age is unknown but all are friendly and in good health. The Ark is in the process of arranging for them to be neutered, and they may end up being fostered in NJ. Mice in CT Nine lab mice were taken in by Ark foster homes, and promptly began having babies left and right. Many are in need of adoptive homes. They are currently located in MA, all are pink-eyed whites. UPDATE: They are now in CT. There are about 24 mice now. Surprise Litter in Brookhaven, PA A surprise litter of rats born 1/11/07 are available for adoption in Brookhaven, PA. 2 females (1 PEW and 1 black and white) All are well-socialized and friendly, transportation may be available in the vicinity of Brookhaven, PA. Snake bite survivors A pair of “feeder” rats was returned to a pet store, after having survived snake bites they were available for adoption. Their rescuer was surprised with a litter of babies, of which three (plus their mom) are in need of new homes. The three females were born July 2006, they are shy but sweet. Two are fawn-hooded siamese, one is a PEW. Their three-story penthouse can accompany them to their new home. Transportation is available within a reasonable distance of Northern New Jersey. "Dumpster Rats Need Love" The Ark received an email from a shelter in Conway, NH. A group of rats was brought in to the shelter after they were dumped at a landfill. There are three females, the mother (Sally) is white with almost a full black face, girls both have black on their faces... all are dumbos! The six males are all white, 3 rex and 3 smooth, some with varying black markings. They are timid, but friendly. All are healthy and are estimated to be under a year old. UPDATE: 3 Males are left!! While most of these rats are located in MA or NJ, transport can be arranged throughout the New England (MA, NH, ME, RI...) and Mid-Atlantic (NJ, NY, CT, MD...) areas. Many other rats available in PA/OH/GA/FL and other parts of the country, particularly MD, Wash DC, VA and OH, ID, IL. The MSPCA Corner
